"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was the first foreign subtitled film that I've seen (I have seen other foreign films, but they were either in English or dubbed), and I was surprised that reading the subtitles didn't get in the way of enjoying the film. The martial arts sequences were some of the best I've ever seen, and were reminiscent of "The Matrix". The acting is good, and, although the plot is fairly silly and the movie occasionally strays from it, the movie is pretty engaging and it's the best martial arts movie that I've seen.

Not just any kung-fu movie. This film's take on kung fu will amaze. The regularity in kung fu with bad dubbing and vivid action are lacking in place of numerous running storylines that in their simplicity make this film. Two present love stories and the lack of constant action will seperate the lovers from the fools. This film will most likely set the action standard for years to come. Chow Yuen Fat attempts to break his hard boiled detective image with this masterpeice and comes off well. Lovers of asian cinema beware, this is a very whitewhased Chinese film, the true test of a kung fu film is the amount of sex, and this film has an enormous amount in comparrison to the almost complete lack of hugging in most kung fu flicks. This is worth your time if you're just interested in a well choreographed, edited and shot film. The scenery is beautiful as is the slow and steady direction. Ang Lee is obviously not an action director and she mixes genre well. See this film if you can, you will not be dissapointed.

I wasn't going to see it, but a good friend recommended, so I did. I don't recommend it, but if your curiosity is peaked, see it. I don't like unrealistic action scenes, so I was not liking the fly-fighting and such. There is a book out which is much more worth it: MEAT by Mark Kilgore. See it on AMAZON.COM and request for it in stores, which they will be glad to do, free of charge or obligation. I challenge this: see it, read the cover, back, & foreword, then try to put it down and leave the store. Thanks!!!

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is an enthralling masterpiece. It boldly goes where really no film I have seen has gone. The fight scenes are out of this world. The fighting is so graceful for the characters have the ability to fly. The performances were pretty good and the story was very intriguing. It is very intersting to learn about mysticism and Confucian ways. The fight scenes are truly what make this movie memorable. The best fight scene to me was the tree top fight scene. It was very interesting how they thought of all these places to fight. The film is simply unforgettable and should definetly not be missed.

Put me in with the minority for this one. Junk in any other language would stink as badly.
The fight scenes would be well-incorporated in a movie which has a plot. Did an infinite number of monkeys type this one?

I liked this movie, but it is the most OVERRATED FILM OF ALL TIME!! It is made very well and the plot is great, but the action isn't that great. This definatly didn't deserved its nomination for Best Picture.

A soaring, larger than life adventure. Mixes themes of love, honor, and loyalty like one of my other favorites of Asian cinema, John Woo's The Killer. The only disappointment for me was the escapist ending, which is all whimper, no bang.

Crouching Tiger is 'NOT' the mother of all movies. In fact it is bearly a good movie. Granted, certain sequences are entertaining. But the story-line is linear as you can get (hey forget about comparing this to Raiders of the Lost Ark, how about a Disney flick). There are no twists and turns to keep you interested (everything is predictable). The love story (or stories) are hardly worth mentioning. You felt very little affection to any of the characters. No, I don't have anything against martial arts movies. In fact being asian I was brought up on them. Its quite sad that for non-Asians to open their eyes and look beyond Hollywood as sources of good movies it takes a movie with a huge budget and a great marketing force to get people to say hey there is a world out there that actually makes very good movies. Unfortunately, there has been many better movies from the East than Crouching Tiger that haven't even seen the light of day in Hollywood.
Crouching Tiger is good for what it is, and what it is is simply a collection of well choregraphed enjoyable fight sequences. But what it is not is a great movie.

Contrary to what the deafening buzz would have you believe, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is not the mother-of-all-movies. It is, however, a highly entertaining "martial arthouse" flick -- an ode to the chop-socky adventures Ang Lee grew up on, just as Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars were tributes to the serials theirs directors loved as children.

In writing this review, I'm trying to avoid just repeating what other people have said. But because I agree with so much of what I've heard, that's a tall order. So please bear with me if I start to sound like a broken record. There are things in this movie that I have never seen before, a sword fight atop a swaying bamboo forest is the strongest example of that. My jaw dropped, literally. I kept thinking that the actors couldn't really be up there but they are. It's beautiful and powerful and new. There aren't a lot of movies you can say that about. The score was affecting and appropriate. And the acting very touching and real. This is made even more amazing by the fact that only one of the principle actors spoke the language used in the film, Mandarin. I read somewhere that it is akin to Meryl Streep and Robert DeNiro making an epic film in Portuguese. Plus having to learn all the intricate fight sequences and fly through the air and up and down walls like you were born to it (I realize they were on wires, but they still had to look like could). I know that sub-titles are the anti-christ to some and to them I can't recommend this film (although even they should give it try), but to everyone else I can't recommend it enough. This is a great popcorn movie (a la Raiders of the Lost Ark) disguised as an art film. It all works.

Well, I'm sorry to have to do this, but I have no other choice but to give this a zero. Seeing as I walked out about half way through which I have rarely ever done, nothing higher can be justified. Contrary it seems to every other reviewer, this wannabe Asian version of Zorro was plain and simply GARBAGE.
Hokey, stupid, and ridiculous, the plot was horrendous, and yes it did resemble The Matrix and some of John Woo's films in terms of action sequeunces which was part the problem - they just sucked. As for the subtitles, I have seen many European films and they've been translated much better so that questions and responses don't appear together.
Finally, I've read some of your reviews comparing this to Raiders of the Lost Ark and other films that are "good for the kids." I sat beside a kid in the theater and he was constantly asking his mother if he needs to read every word. Good for the kids huh? Just do me favour and don't compare this to Raiders of the Lost Ark. That would be a travesty.
***And a note to EDWARDS. I appreciate the comment dude and I'll respond if you don't mind. First, don't put Swayze and Seagal in the same sentence. Secondly, don't compare Chow Yun Fat to Steven Seagal either. One is a 7'th DON, the other is enhanced by movie tricks. One has street moves, the other has silly Jackie Chan type schtick. Finally, I really wanted to like this movie, but one cannot force themselves to like a film. Either you do or you don't. I go to the film festival every year in Toronto and I try to see as many cultural movies as I can. Some just...well let's just say...DON'T TICKLE MY FANCY. This was one of them. One of us should put our e-mail on the site so we chat some more.***

A beautifully-made film. I was hoping to really get into it and enjoy it, and I don't have any doubt that it will be regarded as one of the great martial arts films, but for some reason, I just found it difficult to submerge myself in it. I enjoyed the fight sequences very much, and the acquired skill of flying by the main characters was an interesting element to the film. I'm glad that I took the time to see the film, but as I've implied, it didn't hit the bullseye with me.

Golly, JD sure showed all of us. Here we were, marveling at a motion picture that somehow managed to contain the most unique action sequences perhaps of all time, a touching and ethereal flow of spirituality, and some jaw dropping beautiful art direction, not to mention martial arts legends Chow Yun Fat AND Michelle Yeoh, yet all the while we could have been trying to live up to JD's standards like the Best of Steven Seagal and Patrick Swayze's unforgettable Road House. You sound like an all right sort of chump, and hey you have unusual things to say about movies which is always interesting, but seriously, lighten up. It's not about trying to go against the flow just so you can stand out, right?
Conclusion: this is a phenomenal movie
