Well-written and well-acted. I hope for more Ripley books coming to the screen.

Intelligent, creepy little thriller.... Matt Damon's a bit bland as the title character, but one realizes when he takes on the personas of more interesting, more vibrant people, that maybe that's the whole point. Taken as a whole, the film really was made with a touch of Hitchcock, and it shows, in everything from the creepy psychological undertones to the breathtaking cinematography. Great picture.

Ever wish you could be someone else? Ripley explores this idea and its hollow aftermath with style and suspense. One of the finest ensemble casts ever assembled. It seems like a Hitchcock movie more than many that are labelled as such.

The Talented Mr. Ripley is skillfully acted and easily one of the best-looking movies ever. The original version (Purple Noon) was great and The Talented Mr. Ripley takes everything good from its predecessor and builds on it. I am still in utter shock that Damon wasn't hardly noticed for this. It is his best work hands down. There are so many finite details to Tom Ripley's neurosis, all of which come to life in Damon's skin crawling performance. It is rare that an actor can convey so much with such subtlety. From the scenes where he is calmly telling his elaborate fabrications, to his tension filled awkward movements of nervousness when confronted with his lies, Damon is perfect. By the end of the movie, I was convinced that the real Matt Damon was a gay sociopath. All of this, and I haven't even had the time to mention the amazing performances of Jude Law, Gweneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchet, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Everything about this movie makes it worth studying. It is definitely one that has a lot of replay value for me.

the film took a little while to get underway for me, but once it did i was pretty hooked .. i have to agree with babyduck's review re: the directors use of standard suspense film techniques, but it wasn't too much of a distraction. however, since i've already referenced his review, i have to disagree with him about the ending .. i thought it was the most appropriate place to finish.

Great actors, great acting, beautiful sets, excellent cinematography but... something was missing for me. I'm sure this movie will enjoy great hype at the Oscars and Golden Globes but I have an internal bias against films that are a bit darker in nature. I would have been all over this film if it had ended 10 minutes before the real ending, but of course that would have given the film a much different tone, though no less dark. I was incredibly frustrated with the director's usage of "forced suspense" throughout the film, making the audience more jumpy than was enjoyable. While the music throughout the film was great, the usage of it to induce tension was a tad heavy handed IMO.

A great start leads to an ending that is a bit all over the place....thsi is definately Jude Laws' best performance.

It's hard to say which freaked me out the most: the amazing cinematography and the flawless editing, the strength of Patricia Highsmith's story or the captivating soundtrack.

This story of immorality, materialism and hypocracy features very unlikeable characters and a dark ending. Matt Damon is especially good as is the rest of the ensemble.

If I hear from anyone that liked this, I'll know they're lying. There is just no possible way. Saying you like this just because you think it's an artsy movie does not cut it. Get some BALLS (no pun intended) and tell the truth. The cinematography was gorgeous but the it didn't look anything close to taking place in the 50's. How about the plot? There wasn't one. Gwyneth again, she is brutal.

Good acting, scenery, and costume abound in this intelligent thriller, but the thing I didn't like about it was that it turned into a homosexual love story. Apparently those that created the preview didn't quite "dare" color that shade of the story into the trailer. And with good reason. I wouldn't have gone to see it if I had known.

This film really should have been title “The Talented Mr. Damon,” not to mention, yummy! Seriously, this film showcases Matt Damon’s darker side; it shows he’s not just a pretty face, or the thief with a heart of gold, it shows he has that inner-evil we all strive to hide.
This film had such an unexpected darkness displayed in beautiful settings. As an avid suspense fan, watching “Mr. Ripley” make all the silly mistakes everyone worth their weight in Agatha Christie novels cringe, was exciting. I yelled at the screen (in my head – Silence is Golden) urging him not to open the door, or better yet, move to a different country – duh!! I will point out that you can get easily distracted from the film BY the film. Personally, I’m getting to an age where actions matter, and I don’t want to be silent when I witness bad things, and this movie is fraught with bad things. Mr. Ripley is really just a loser who turns into a serial murderer because people are getting in the way of his plans for grandeur. What is the difference between this character and Dahmer, for example? My hope would be that people will ultimately recognize their disgust for this behavior, and this character, which will prevent any loser from copying the crimes displayed.
Regardless of my personal opinion on the morality of the film, this is for anyone interested in a well-acted, well-written movie, who can stomach the ride.
I would watch this movie rarely, because it does get a bit disturbing at times; however, I am drawn to the acting, cast, script and scenery.
