A submarine carring nuclear warheads flounders under the ocean. A team of navy seals retreive the warheads. Meanwhile, non Terrestial Intelligences (NTIs) make contact with the crew living deep below the ocean. This movie stars movie vetrans Ed Harris (The Right Stuff), and Michael Bien (Ailens). This movie is full of suspense, special effects - (Including an underwater submarine chase.) This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat. I was a little disappointed with the special effects of the NTI ship on the surface of the ocean. It took away that sense of suspense felt throughout the movie. Nevertheless, this is definitely a movie you should see!

I have to admit that I only saw this when it first came out (and not since), but I do remember the great special effects, especially for when it was made. If it came on TV I probably wouldn't turn it off....

Give me Aliens over Avatar and give me this over the okay but extremely overrated Titanic. This one has a far more engaging story, far more developed characters and is way less trite and way more entertaining.

I've seen this movie two times. I bought the special edition dvd with an hour of extra footage. I watched it once and was bored, but the second time i watched it, I was glued to the set. The storyline was great, the acting was great, the imagery and efx were awesome. I'm not really into underwater adventures, but this was such a great movie. The subtle love story did add to it but never turned into the main storyline, good thing. There are scenes in this film that I just wanna watch over and over, the hurricane hitting was so fun to watch. You really can get into the characters and what they are feeling. I wasn't so sure about Michael B as a villian, wasn't sure he was absolutely essential to the plot, but as the story unfolded, he added alot. The ending was just beautiful and so interesting to watch. Loved this movie, will watch it over and over again.

I'm basing my rating and comments on the director's cut of the flick. James Cameron unfortunately had to cut the film by almost an hour's worth due to studio objections on the length. Unfortunately a large portion of the film's impact was also lost. Rumored to be the most tortuous film shoot of all time (though evidently Titanic might be worse) the results are cinematically phenomenal. Well worth the 3 hours of screen time.

2009 edit: wtf was I thinking when I wrote that?? This movie is outstanding in many ways, least of all for Michael Biehn (bless him, but c'mon, one of the main reasons to see this movie? I think I was about 11 when I thought that), and to compare it to "Deep Star Six" or "Leviathan" is just superficial sub-genre linking. Stupid bastard.
This underwater thriller -- by far technically superior to its slew of siblings, including "Leviathan" and "Deepstar Six" -- tries to be a science fiction film (especially during the climax, when the deep-dwelling organism reveals itself), but ends up more a half-scale fantasy. The premise -- a team of researchers at the bottom of the ocean encounter an apparently fathomless cavern inhabited by a mysterious creature -- is less horror-genre than it sounds, and the "alien" is much different from the essentially identical monsters in "Deepstar Six" and "Leviathan", both visually and in terms of characterization. Truly state-of-the-art special effects, which reach a magnificent zenith in a sequence during which a snake-like cable of pure water slithers through the interior of the ship, seeking to understand the people better. The cast is stable, fulfilling their duties adequately, but have no capacity to shine, perhaps given James Cameron's greater emphasis on what they discover than who "they" are at all. The only standout is Michael Biehn, in what is arguably his most (and only) over-the-top, enjoyable performance, thanks to a unique movie opportunity to see him as the villain. Ultimately there's little to hark over beyond effects and Biehn, but those two features alone are worth it
