Is there a prison film that doesn't portray prisoners as essentially good people who are being mistreated by the system? Seems like almost all of them have some decent guy, who may done wrong in the past, but who certainly doesn't deserve this kind of punishment, and who usually finds salvation through a prison escape. The Eastwood character is ham-handedly given attributes that make it easy to root for him. (His dossier, left on the warden's desk, lingers on the phrase "superior intelligence," because, like The Shawshank Redemption, this is a movie where we side with the smart guy in a room full of stupid guys. Another early scene has Eastwood kicking some fat, ugly guy's ass after he makes a homosexual lunge at him in the shower. Talk about playing to the lowest common denominator.)
Despite the clumsy & obvious character development, the movie is always watchable, thanks to Eastwood's excellent performance. He's an actor who knows his limitations and excels within them.

Here's another Eastwood top notch movie. The true story of a prisoner's planned escape from Alcatraz is staged so well. It makes you feel like you're actually inside those walls. Excellent!

Escape from Alcatraz is one of the first films that I remember being totally engrossed in as a child. Alcatraz existed in my mind at the time as some cruel playground legend (I had not yet been to San Francisco when I first saw this film). I was captivated at the lengths that our prisoner (played by Clint Eastwood) would go to for his freedom. I also found it interesting then (and many times since) that if you make a bad man the protagonist of the film, you can pretty easily get the crowd rooting for him. Such is the case here. When he finally does make it out, we're all cheering. Some have said that The Shawshank Redemption draws a bit too heavily from this film, and I do agree that there are certain elements that are obviously similar, and even details that may have been gleaned, but they verily are two different films. Well worth watching.

I loved this movie. I thought it was great. I always wondered if they actually used Alcatraz. But it may not have had special effects (Like there was anything that needed it) it was still great. I recommend this movie. You'll be cheering for the convicts all the way. It's sad at the end. Well I say see it. Anyone will love this.
