This flick is an excellent one and one of Ridley Scott's best I have ever seen.

Just having the movie shot in two countries is an expense all in its own yet the story is well written and over amazingly well done.

I highly recommend this flick to anyone who loves good story lines and wicked action.

The bike scene where the dude is decapitated is way cool.

This could have been so so much better....what could have been an insight into the world of Japanese mafia style gang warfare turned out to be a regular Hollywood action movie.

Nice action and Douglas is good too. It's above the average American action movie (thanks to Ridley Scott) but ain't no masterpiece though.

Black Rain stars Michael Douglas, Ken Takakura, Yusaku Matsuda, Andy Garcia, Tomisaburo Wakayama and Kate Capshaw. Michael Douglas stars as Nick Conklin, a kind of dark, New York City police officer, who is under suspicion of being dirty. He and his partner, played by Andy Garcia, have to take a Yakuza gangster back to Osaka Japan.

Ridley Scott, who created Thelma and Louis, Alien, and Blade Runner, does a PHENOMENAL job with the most under-appreciated movie he will ever make, and he succeeded in making an impressively beautiful looking cop movie; but it’s not just a cop movie. Black Rain has a lot of emotional depth and meaning. I see the relationship between Nick and Masahiro (Takakura’s character) as symbolic of the relationship between The U.S and Japan. We have many things to learn from each other, as those two characters did, and this movie did a wonderful job of presenting the relationship in a powerful way. Those people who claim that Black Rain is a Japan bashing movie probably don’t realize that it was nominated for best foreign film in Japan, and they probably don’t realize that Nick learned just as much from Masahiro as Masahiro learned from Nick.

I like most of the characters in this film, but by far my most favorite, is Kogi Sato, played by Yusaku Matsuda. Before the first half hour is over, there is no question that Sato is evil, but in case we needed reminding, Matsuda does an incredible job of using facial expressions, body language, and voice to prove over and over how evil Sato really is. I’ve never been able to find any other movies with Yusaku Matsuda, and that is a shame.

Black Rain is not for everyone. If you often find yourself complaining about “formulaic Hollywood drivel”, then you probably won’t like this movie, as its dramatic flair is of an unattractive kind to many movie lovers. To me, it is simply a very good film.

It's so rare (and a pleasure I might add) to have all reviewers pretty much agree on a film's rating.

I too felt this American vs. Yakuza was pretty good but could have been a great movie. Michael Douglas was great though and there was plenty of action to go around. Still, a worthwhile rental for action fans.
