I know that this was a good movie. But I just didn't connect with it.

The stories of four different Asian women who came to America for new lives is beautifully tied together by Oliver Stone. What I thought would be a chick flick is a thought provoking and inspirational film.

I was really hoping to enjoy The Joy Luck Club since I had heard so many good things about it. After seeing it, I'd just say that it was pretty good, but it wasn't really anything to fuss over. It's an ambitious story of sixteen different mother-daughter tales and the literal and figurative journey from China to the United States. It tells of the clashes between the two cultures, the passing of the old in favor of the new, and the question of how far one should go to preserve the heritage. I think the people that will like this most are those from Chinese descent, or women, or those willing to really make an effort to enjoy a cinematic experience. If you're none of the three, you might want to pick something else to watch.

I think you really have to be first generation Asian Americans to truly appreciate this film. So for us it has a much stronger impact than second/third generations Asian Americans. A great powerful film that seeks to portray rather than to explain. Of course - I still think my parents are nuts sometimes.
