Very early Cronenberg plays out like yet another "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" yet succeeds by pumping out all of the director's fascinating trademarks: creepy tone (maintained by a noticeable absence of sound in many scenes and then an unnerving score in others), unpleasant links between sex and violence, fleshy effects, curiously matter of fact performances, some left turns in the plot, a gradually enveloping sense of dread, and a grim finale. Good stuff.
