Keanu Reeves is a "nerd" (uh, no) who gets to take one of the most popular (read: bitchy, self-absorbed) girls in school to the prom when she loses a bet with her friends. Instead of an awkward night at or around the dance co-starring various teen stereotypes that leads to a gradual mutual understanding of and even affection for one another, what ensues is a crazy "After Hours" from dusk 'til dawn adventure in which Keanu gets them lost en route to the prom on the "other side of the tracks" where, apparently, all of the black and hispanic minorities wallow in anarchic decadence. Keanu accidentally gets drunk, fatally insults the highly-feared local pimp (thus: duel at sunrise), sells the girl to this pimp, then spends the rest of the night trying to find her while evading goons, thieves, prostitutes, and various seedy characters. Yeah, it's predictable, unoriginal (even though the first half of the movie is abnormally structured as a methodically unfolding flashback), and doesn't bring enough verve, wit, or charm to the proceedings to enable us to forgive either of those two shortcomings, but it's Keanu Reeves! I could've enjoyed it more had its edge been sharper with an explicit R-rating and less teen shenanigans, or if, conversely, it had toned down its obsession with hookers and portraying the entire world as evil scum and imbued its spirit with adventure rather than nightmare, but as derivative fluff goes, this ain't bad. As bratty as the girl is (even after she comes around to liking Keanu, she keeps acting like a beeyotch), at least she's played by Lori Loughlin, for whom I have some good will in reserve after the many years I spent watching "Full House" in my youth (and for future reference, that mercy extends to everyone from the cast except the Olsen Twins and the girl who played Kimmy Gibler)
The point is, I am teen cinema's bitch
