The action scenes are satisfying. Not much else matters in this movie.
The rave scene is unbearable and I almost walked out on the film at this point. Fortunately, I made it through the silliness and was still around for some fantastic fight scenes. At least, they were thrilling AFTER I got past the computer generated look to the fight scenes. Some people I know were angry at how stiff the animation is but that doesn't bother me much. It will, however, in a few short years look terribly dated.
I saw this movie a week or two after many of my friends saw it. During those weeks, I heard comments like, "You're not ready, man. This one will blow you away AND it's really smart." Okay, for the record, the first movie was not brilliant sci-fi. It rehashed basic philosophy and provided us with another excuse to be lazy, pathetic post-modernists: It's not real in here, man...it's the matrix. This sequel doesn't even offer the viewer such basic philosophical ponderings. Instead, we get long-winded nonsense from the Oracle and the Architect -- I assure you, watch these speeches again and you will realize they say nothing of any real import and do not further the plot -- and an awful underworld, Zion.
I will watch the third installment (I'd be out of the cultural loop if I skipped it) but this trilogy doesn't hold a candle to Lord of the Rings or the original Star Wars...though, sadly, it's better than the new Star Wars.

I definitely had unreasonably high expectations for this movie. Here's my enigmatic opinion: too much talk, and too much hyper-action. There was very little in between, visually subtle images and subtle dialog. I tuned out during the Architect's blathering, and probably missed some other stuff. I'll see it again, just to find out if I missed anything.

i must say, i had huge expectations coming into this movie and it sure did deliver. the special effects are astonishing and it greatly expands the matrix universe. u really havta listen carefully to the architect at the end of the movie. there's a lotta intersting stuff he talks about.. the end will blow any matrix fan away. any person who likd the first one is guareteed by me to like this one also. it delivers on the same level. go see this movie!

Reminded me a lot of a video game; they're told they have to find some guy, so then they run to find him and kill some bad guys. They get there, the guy exposes some plot and tells them to find someone else. They run to someone else and fight on the way, repeat ad nauseum. It has the same "quality" of dialogue as any game and the same convoluted story that you don't really care about because all you want to do is get to the end and kick as much bad guy ass as possible. The "story" concerns Neo (Keanu Reeves) who is still doing whatever he did at the end of the last movie, bangin' Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) on the side and flying (because apparently flying is now his superpower) around until big, evil bug things start floating around and Agent Smith keeps reproducing for some reason. The screenplay is atrocious; it's a jumbled mess of idea that thinks of itself as smart but is actually incredibly vapid; the dialogue is incoherent and rambling. All in all, this doesn't really bode well for the movie... except that it's reedeemed by some absolutely fabulous action scenes (the one where Neo fights a bunch of Agent Smiths and the freeway chase scene, mostly) and some interesting directorial flourishes. Enjoyable on a primal level.

I thought Keanu Reeves was a scarecrow because he looks like a skinny wimp with straw coming out of his body. Man is Carrie Anne Cunt ugly or what!!!!!!! She looks like my old dog Rowlf who I had to shoot in the face when he kept taking a shit in my bed. i mean she looks like my dog after I shot him!! haha But the special effects was cool if your this big fuckn geek who likes Frodo and getting fuckt upt eh ass then thsi is your perfect movie you homosexual

Very, very good movie. A worthy successor to the first that does nothing but improves on a damn good idea.
All the new characters made the story deeper and give the whole Matrix and real world ideas a lot more meaning, but also added more questions. Monica Belucci was HOT and naughty as Persephone, and I really hope the Twins aren't dead. They were to cool. I liked how Neo has really come to terms with his powers and learned how to use them. The Architect was an interesting addition to the mix, and I have to wonder if he was telling the real truth of if he was making it up to test Neo.
The return of Agent Smith was very effective, and the fight between 100 him's and Neo was out of control.
I do agree that some parts were long, but it didn't really bother me. It was interesting enough to keep it from seeming tedious.
The end was great. I'm glad the next one (Revolutions) is coming out in November so we can find out how it all ends up.

What was the thing that made this film good? I thought of this for a long time and came to a conclusion: THE EXCITMENT! I waited quite patienatly for 5 years for this movie to come out and man that made this movie feel great. Not only the excitment made this film good, the action scenes and story were a step up from the original masterpiece. Yet the feel of the original is not there. But it didn't ruin the film that much at all. The style and everything was there and that is what made this movie great.

Bloated big-budget sequel that should be of only marginal interest to anyone who isn't a Matrix fanboy. Still, the two stand-alone action sequences are fun to watch and it's nice to see religious zealot Morpheus get his bubble burst in the end.

oh yeah.. the rave scene was horrible.. omfg. Overall the movie was _not bad_. Not as ground breaking as the first one. The conversation with the architect was the whole film for me. I wanted to watch as the plot unfolded. But besides that particular scene, it was just so straight forward. The third one better be damn good.

Ok to be clear. You're not watching this movie for the great acting or dialogue here.
This movie certainly sets new standards for the look and feel of the Matrix universe. All the action scenes were just amazing. I could go on and on, but why bother? Just go watch it already.
Why didn't this movie get a 10 from me?
I'm not sure. Something felt not 10'ish. But it came close. I think I have problems with the ending... but realize that the story arc demanded this ending.

I was right in expecting this sequel to fall short of the original, but its entertainment value actually surprised me. Like The Two Towers, this follows up a thought-provoking Part 1 with a more action-oriented Part 2. But if I'm going to have my senses assaulted, I'd rather it be by mindbending martial arts than by armies of computer-generated demon spawn.

This is classic comic book story telling...The Matrix triology is the modern day Starwars...The first one blew us away...this one is a little more of the same and further develops the story. I can understand how some can be disappointed with this...but you don't come to watch this kind of movie for Keano Reeeves' acting like you didn't love Star Wars for Mark Hamill's acting either. This is unmissable for fans of the Matrix, recommended for those he enjoyed the first and to be avoided if you don't like the first one as this movie does not offer anything different.

Most of the action sequences are needlessly long (Q: why didn't Neo just fly away from all those Agent Smiths in the first place? A: Because the directors thought it looked cool to have him fight 100 of them at once), especially the much-lauded chase scene, which I kinda zoned out during. There were also a good number of droning speeches by robed councillors, Morpheus, the Oracle, and some dude named the Architect (though what he had to say was pretty interesting, too bad it took over two hours to get to that point).
Candidate for stupidest scene of the year: The Rave Scene.
