The ultimate example of style over substance. Jean-Marc Barr is an American who comes to Germany right after the war to work on a train. He meets a woman (the daughter of the owner of the railroad company, played by Barbara Sukowa) who may or may not be a Nazi sympathizer known as “werewolves”. Von Trier goes for sensory overload here; visually, the film is absolutely fascinating (more so than amazing, I think). The film is shot in black and white, but von Trier uses seemingly random shifts of color throughout, and many scenes are shot using rear-projection, a method that’s used very little nowadays. There’s also the matter of Max von Sydow’s narration, which puts the viewer inside the main character (“You are in Munich. It is Christmas. You are feeling sleepy.”), resulting in a very, very unusual feel. All the visual gizmos in the world can’t overcome the mundane story, however; until about half an hour from the end, the film isn’t particularly captivating story-wise. It’s definitely unlike anything you’ve ever seen, however.

This irrational train journey through the post-World War II Germany is Lars von Trier's best film for the time being. Unique in its subconcious look at nazism. This will not put you to sleep - it will hypnotize you.

Lars Von Trier -- wunderkind or Emperor with No Clothes? This beautiful but cold film doesn't give much of an indication of the guy's supposed genius, and is likely to put you to sleep.
