Film is dream. In today's world of the mega-blockbuster, special-effects bonanza, the public flock to the movie theater. It is because everyone sees movies, that many people see the exceptional releases. In this way, much of the general public is exposed to good art . . . whether they intended to be or not (or, for that matter, realize it). I'm a painter, but in the painting, sculpture, drawing, artsy-fartsy world, we reach out only to the over-educated or desperate. Books are read, movies seen, and TV absorbed before people make their way to the contemporary art gallery. The art world is little more than an inbred publicity machine. Meanwhile, Hollywood and a slew of independents are telling tales that matter and reaching millions.
I am leary of "critics," but I like to write and talk about film as much as I concern myself with my own work. I hope you enjoy my two-cents as I enjoy yours.
