[The biggest mystery with Roman Polanski movies is deciding what country to attach the film to --is this a British film? French film?]
The story doesn't make a lick of sense (the mystery, once explained, raises more questions than answered, though you do have to chuckle at the whopper they're telling), but this is still an entertaining thriller that works despite not employing the usual tactics of the genre. Credit Polanski for the balancing act, as well as the largely excellent cast (Kim Cattrell is miscast though). It is hard to get over the silliness of the story, which amounts to something a 12 year-old would've thought up after watching The Manchurian Candidate for the first time. Considering Scorsese's Shutter Island, 2010 seems to be the year the old masters wanted to show they still had chops even while slumming with beach-read material.
