Not that impressive. Despite Jeff Bridges' full-on inhabiting of the role, Maggie Gyllenhaal's also customarily convincing work, and an out-of-nowhere excellent side performance from Colin Farrell, this has the routine feel of the very familiar saga of an alcoholic who hits bottom. The subtle approach to story, dialogue, setting, and detail is appreciated but, not to be a jerk or anything, this kind of low-key naturalism has become quite common in independent films over the past couple decades, so it's hardly something to single out for praise if the surrounding film itself isn't already unique or strong. And it isn't. With a re-arrangement of details, you've seen this movie too many times already. I want to believe that it was worth my time for Bridges' Oscar-winning work, and to the extent that he usually doesn't have an entire movie all to himself to lounge around doing his own thing, it is, but still, he's done better before. Awesome that the movie made a great actor like him the center of adoring attention for a while, but to me it seemed like shrewd awards-seasion bait and nothing more. It plays all the same old storytelling keys to manipulate you and then applies all the same indie-film touches to retain dignity and authenticity. I can't imagine it having any lasting value a few years from now

It's always good to spend time in the onscreen company of Jeff Bridges, and he's given plenty of time to strut his stuff here, which he does without ever going overboard or losing touch with his character. But it's still a dimestore story with no memorable aspects.
