I'm not sure what else there is to say about "Up"-- it's just pitch-perfect, from Ed Asner's endearingly craggy performance to the wealth of wonders found on the island. Of course everybody mentions the opening sequence, and rightfully so-- it's cinematic poetry, emblematic in scant minutes of every reason that we fall in love with film, capturing the rapturous highs and tear-soaked lows of the life cycle in all of its glory. Eye-poppingly fantastic as well as essentially human.

It was a great pixar film but didn't wow me like the others. The storyline was quite simple and lacked the strong messages that I enjoyed from Wall-E, Ratatouille, etc.. The characters were adorable but were stuck in stereotypes (grumpy grandpa that cannot let go of his old house + boyscout kid under a divorced mom trying too hard to get more of his dad's time). It was a good film but not one of the best of pixar.

Not entirely perfect (some bland jokes, unsatisfying resolution to the Muntz character, and the epilogue should've been more ambiguous) but otherwise, in particular regards to its appreciation for wonder and the beautiful compromise that is life, and the accompanying undercurrent of sorrow (the montage at the beginning is a stunning work of art unto itself that could break down anyone), this was positively splendorous...after several halfway efforts, Pixar finally returns with a triumph (in my opinion; I know everyone adores "Wall-E" and "Ratatouille")

Pixar is still firing on all cylinders --Up is an imaginative, stirring film that provides entertainment for the young 'uns and their wards. I know there's some talk that Pixar should take the next step and stop conceding to kids if they are ever to make an animated masterpiece, but the concerns of a few pointy-headed film critics are probably going to be outweighed by the families who enjoy the shared experience.
