The official provocator of Cannes '09 feels as much provocative as it feels genually fucked up and painful. It's a self righteous overkill of anxiety, torture and psychosis but it never feels anything like a joke - even though when the final dedication to Tarkovsky popped up the audience laughed and I did too, not knowing how else to react. With each new film von Trier seems to break cinematic ground and this is no exception. The visuals are brilliant and the performances by Dafoe and Gainsbourg are pretty amazing. Also, the most adult movie I can think of, like about being an adult.
