Visually sumptuous, and often quite wrenching; there's not a lot going on here, in the strictest movie-watcher definition of "plot", but the simple tale is artfully framed, and impeccably acted. It's also quite often so visceral that some scenes veered uncomfortably close to making me turn away; a rare feat for this horror-movie fanatic. Although i suppose there's a world of difference between charmingly inane splatter FX and brutal guard beatings, walls smeared with excrement, and a slow, withering death by starvation. Also, Michael Fassbender: prone to hanging dong, yes, but also prone to delivering a nuanced, absorbing performance, all the same.

Steve McQueen's formally audacious film about the 1981 hunger strike of IRA prisoners is both thoughtful and stomach0-churning. Perhaps sometimes a bit too pointed (especially in early scenes) and cutesy with what it does and doesn't show, but McQueen pulls it off well for the most part.
